Cherry Blossom Planting in Cowra
On Sunday, 28 September, SJIS staff and our school captains represented SJIS by planting a cherry blossom tree in Cowra.
Cowra is a historic and significant site, as there are the Japanese Gardens and Cultural Centre, as well as the Cowra War Cemetery and site of the Prisoner of War Camp. The Gardens were created as a sign of peace and reconciliation.
Each spring, many locals and visitors enjoy “the Avenue of Cherry Trees (Sakura Avenue)” which links the Japanese Garden with the POW site. Each tree is sponsored by Japanese businesses as well as Australian school children.
This year, SJIS proudly joined this initiative, raising donations within our school and donating our own cherry blossom tree and plaque.
It was a truly memorable day under the beautiful blue sky!

Name

The Sydney Japanese International School acknowledges the Garigal people as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which our school is located. We pay our respects to their ancestors and descendants who continue cultural and spiritual connections to Country. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, learning and storytelling. May the spirit of the Garigal people always be present with us under the shade of the beautiful trees across our campus, when we hear the sounds of nature and feel the sun and ocean breeze on our skin, and as we grow, play, learn and connect.
